A Suffolk Service Saving Lives
For over half a century, the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) has been at the heart of emergency care across the county. Entirely funded by donations, the charity provides specialist clinicians who bring advanced medical skills and equipment to patients in life-threatening situations before they reach the hospital.
From roadside collisions to critical medical emergencies in people’s homes, the SARS teams deliver interventions that can make the difference between life and death. Last year alone, SARS clinicians were mobilised more than 600 times, often arriving first on scene.
Unlike many frontline services, SARS receives no central government funding. Its survival depends entirely on the generosity of the public, local businesses, and community fundraising.
Meet Rod: Calm, Kind and Always Ready

Among the SARS volunteers is Rod, a Critical Care Paramedic whose dedication spans more than 30 years. Rod began his career with the Ambulance Service back in 1989, qualifying as a paramedic two years later. In 2005, he took to the skies with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and has been a reassuring presence in countless high-stakes moments.
He joined SARS in 2011, bringing his wealth of experience and calm expertise to Suffolk’s roads and communities. Additionally, Rod has volunteered for the RNLI for over three decades, currently serving as Second Coxswain, and has helped save lives at sea.
Rod is just one of the many highly skilled clinicians who give their time and knowledge to SARS, all without charge; however, every one of them needs support to continue doing what they do best.
A Brewery with Heart
That’s where Humber Doucy Brewery has stepped in. They’ve created a brand-new limited-edition ale, Responder, brewed in honour of Rod and the SARS team. With each bottle sold, £1 will be donated directly to support Rod’s work and the wider charity, helping to fund the vital equipment and training that keep this volunteer service running.
It’s a simple idea with a big impact – every purchase helps fuel life-saving care right here in Suffolk.
Where to Find Responder
You can pick up bottles of Responder at Finbows Tap, Bacton, open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, where you will always find a friendly welcome. It is also available here so you can support SARS from the comfort of your own home.
